Beyond Megawatts: How utility-scale solar strengthens Malaysia's energy security

For much of the past decade, the energy transition has been measured in megawatts. Today, the conversation is moving beyond that.  

In the next phase of this transition, success will increasingly depend on the ability to deliver renewable electricity reliably, securely and at scale - where and when it is needed.  

According to the International Energy Agency (IEA), electricity demand is expected to continue rising over the coming years, driven by industrial electrification, artificial intelligence (AI), digital infrastructure and the rapid expansion of data centres. For countries seeking to attract these modern industries, expanding renewable generation alone will not be enough. As renewables become a larger part of the generation mix, greater attention must be given to transmission infrastructure, energy storage and grid flexibility to ensure clean electricity can be delivered reliably and efficiently. 

Malaysia is already experiencing this shift.  

With the country strengthening its position as a regional hub for advanced manufacturing, digital services and AI-enabled industries, reliable electricity is emerging as a key driver of economic competitiveness. The Malaysian government estimates that data centres could consume approximately 73,274 GWh of electricity annually - equivalent to around one-third of Peninsular Malaysia's projected electricity demand - by 2035, underscoring the need to expand generation capacity, strengthen grid infrastructure and deploy low-carbon energy solutions in parallel. 

Meeting this demand will require an integrated electricity system that combines conventional and renewable generation with stronger transmission networks, energy storage and greater grid flexibility. In pursuing new growth opportunities across these emerging industries, the challenge will be to meet rising electricity demand in a way that strengthens long-term energy security, supports economic growth and advances the energy transition. 


Utility-scale solar as strategic infrastructure 

Malaysia's National Energy Transition Roadmap (NETR) targets renewable energy to account for 70% of installed generation capacity by 2050. Achieving this ambition will require both additional renewable generation capacity and the supporting infrastructure needed to integrate and deliver renewable electricity reliably across the system.  

Utility-scale solar is becoming a key component of Malaysia's strategic energy infrastructure because it offers one of the fastest and most scalable pathways to expand renewable electricity capacity while supporting a more diversified generation mix. Growing demand from energy-intensive industries means projects of this scale will play an increasingly important role in meeting the country's electricity needs. 

Specifically, Malaysia's Large-Scale Solar (LSS) programme demonstrates how policy ambition is being translated into real infrastructure. Under the latest LSS5, approximately 2,000 MWac of capacity was awarded, including Gentari's 150 MWp project in Kuala Muda, Kedah. Collectively, projects like these reflect the disciplined execution, technical capability and long-term planning required to strengthen the electricity system that underpins Malaysia's energy security. 


Enabling Malaysia's next phase of growth 

In the global competition for investment, countries are competing not only on land, talent and digital connectivity, but also on the availability of clean energy and the strength of the electricity systems that underpin it.  

For modern industries, access to reliable, secure and affordable electricity is becoming an increasingly important investment consideration. For Malaysia, strengthening the national grid will be essential to supporting industrial growth, attracting investment, and reinforcing long-term energy security. As demand continues to grow, ensuring electricity can be delivered consistently and at scale will be critical to maintaining economic competitiveness.
